Within the collaborative walls of the IMRC Rm. 102, Joline Blais’s NMD 206 class has been busy updating the New Media webpage in attempts to better reach the staff, students. This has certainly been no easy task, as students are constantly working in new environments, relying on each other to piece the together every small component of this site. Some elements include a news feed, portfolio showcase, and event calendar to better publicize the event and resources of the IMRC. “Its been a good experience, the website has only fully crashed twice so far” Said Devon McNerney, a student working on the menu system of the website. The work delegation in this class is surprisingly pretty professional, as everyone has their own role that fits their technological strengths. The website has even provided many learning experiences away from the computer, such as photography skills and networking. “Though a very gradual process we’ve made a lot of progress and come up with some really great ideas” another student added.
The website is hosted by WordPress, a relatively new website design software that combines elegance with simplicity. Over the course of the semester the class has undergone constant discussion over contermperate deseign, business, and media. This class breaks away from asking “What is New Media?” and asks “What can New Media do for me?”. All of these concepts have been greatly considered when developing a site that attempts to project all of this program’s ideals.
So what was originally a simple project to renovate a website has become an expansive learning experience that has touched on topics far broader than new media. Devon McNerney states “This class has certainly helped me center my focus in new media, I feel I’ve really found my niche”.
