Blockchain Club
A technological revolution is coming in distributed ledger technology, and we want to provide a place for students to get involved and invested.
Blockchain technology, which is what bitcoin is built on, as well as other distributed digital ledger tech such as Tangle are completely revolutionizing the way we will interact and utilize technology and internet services. For as long as the internet around, everything has revolved around copying files. When you send a text message, an image, a torrent file, or even when you send money through a service like PayPal, you’re sending a copy of some piece of data, not the original. This is the true, single selling point of blockchain technology, the thing that will truly change stuff.
We personally think it’s crazy there are no computer science classes or anything what-so-ever involving this new tech here at the University of Maine. So a friend and I have decided we want to start a blockchain based “club” to try and provide a resource as well as an entry point into the crypto world. The club is now organized and will meet twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6PM in Chadbourne Hall, with one meeting focusing on the finance and trading side, and the other focusing on the technology and use case side of things.
To get this going, we have already taken a few steps. We have a facebook group that will serve as both a hub for information and as an entry point for new members, as sharing content through Facebook is really lucrative. Lastly, we have a Discord group, which is similar to slack, that will allow all members to stay in contact outside of the meetings, as well as being an additional place (on top of the FB group) to congregate information and discussion. Lastly, we will be printing out a couple of the above posters to get some good old fashion advertising going around campus.
