Autobotography Intent

Summary: Editing footage of people in a manner that makes it seem like they’re saying something they’re not.

“Identity” can mean many different things for different people. Some people have a fixed identity that doesn’t change because they hold their identity close to them, while others have trouble forming an identity of their own. Everything you post publicly on social media automatically has the potential to reach an enormous amount of people.

Portraying one’s identity on social media proves to complicate that word even more because you can portray yourself as anything on social media, even as somebody else.

For my project, I’d like to make a short video featuring either myself, others, or both. My intention is to compile footage of people talking, perhaps I’d make a prompt so the dialogue is kind of similar. Once I have enough footage of each person talking, I’d break the speech into clips, and rearrange the clips and make them say something completely different. I know it would be blatant that the video’s been chopped up and spun around, but I think it would still be effective in emphasizing the fact that people aren’t always representing themselves/identity in an effecting manner. I’ve seen things like this before, like editing footage of news people and making it a song, and in other means, but I’ve never seen it directed towards younger people who have various presences on social media.

  • Before you interview people, make sure you get their consent to publish their rearranged words online before you plan to publish it. It’ll be a weird pitch to people, and I’m assuming you’ll get some negative reactions, but it’s better to get those out of the way first than to not be able to publish something because one of your subjects isn’t comfortable.

  • can you specify a topic? maybe keep working on masculinity to probe deeper in this area? maybe look at how men and women exhibit masculine traits? could be funny to suggest some women speaking in more masculine ways that men–like YES MEN Barbie/GI Joe swap. Google it…
