Response 1 – Sam W

One idea about New Media which I found interesting came from the reading “What is New Media?”. I was very intrigued by the difference in media/ medium and vehicles, something which I hadn’t really thought about in the way explained in the reading. All of these things that we consider media today such as the internet and television are not media, but vehicles for media. Media is a more basic concept of communication. I really liked this description of Media/New Media and found it helpful for getting a better understanding on what media really is.

I enjoyed the New Media strategies reading and discussions which it brought up in lab. I think that a big part of New Media is using your knowledge to solve problems. It was really great to see the actual solutions real students from the university had for problems they found. I think that it was a good exercise to talk about what the best way to solve the problem was. I also really liked the idea of many to many media, and how everyone has the ability to add to the project or thought.

  • What does many-many really mean? Fro religion? for politics? for communication? for families? for communities? for economics? And what kind of humans does it generate? vs one-to-many for example?
Are corporations many-to-many? is there a form of government or business that could be many-to-many? Have you heard of worker coops? http://livingeconomiesforum.org/new-economy-resources
How do hackers open up the door to many-to-many? of how do they challenge one-to-many asymmetries of power and information?
New Media tools don’t only build new tech toys, they have the potential to change how we are human and how we organize our cultures and live on earth. Can you begin to see how?
