Hacktivism Intent- AndrewK
My intent is to find a way for people to find art supplies locally for classes or in general for the least cost.
I decided the best way to do this would be to create a website with discussion forums about places in the area where people can find cheap art supplies. This would be a benefit to students here at the University of Maine. The reason for this is because often students who are in art classes are required to buy art supplies, and this would allow the students to find the cheapest art supplies. Being a college student I understand how having a small budget can get in the way of purchasing school supplies and it would be nice to be able to compare the price of the bookstore art kits to the supplies in other locations such as Bangor.
This website would also be useful for people who make art who aren’t students. This is because they would benefit from being able to find the cheapest art supplies, making it more affordable.
This website would cost roughly $20 dollars to keep going per year (this includes the domain name and web hosting, unless I used a free WordPress website), and would take roughly a couple weeks to make.

I like the idea of having a website that uses discussion forums that people can use to try and find places in their area to buy art supplies at a good price. I’ve never taken any art classes here at UMaine, but from what I understand students have to pay for their own supplies rather than having the teacher provide them with supplies like when I was in high school. Even though I’ve never taken any art classes here at UMaine, I am still very much aware of how ridiculously expensive a lot of things here on campus are. Just the other day I had to get an iClicker for one of my classes and it cost 40 dollars. If it costs that much for a white remote, then I imagine art supplies would be at an even more ridiculous price here on campus, and I like the idea of trying to find local places that are off campus, but still close enough by for students, and will sell them at a much cheaper price.
I also think that creating a website with discussion forums is a good way get people to learn about what are some good places to buy these things. The only thing I’d suggest is that it wouldn’t have to be limited to just art supplies, but people could also comment on where to get other items for other classes too. I’ve started to save a ton of money this year by getting books for my classes from places off campus at much more realistic prices myself, and it would be cool to share places like that with others too in case anyone else wants to buy things for their classes at a less expensive price too.
Concept
which media?
Internet Website
new media strategies?
http://beautifultrouble.org/tactic/debt-strike/
issues?
Expensive suppliers
interesting?
Has potential to be, though follows a generic Buy/Sell/Trade concept
Design
clarity?
Clear enough indeed
engagement?
How are you going to get people involved and participating in this? How can you ensure that people will continue to use the site after they have gotten what they wanted?
appropriate tech?
The website seems appropriate. Universally accessible
cost/sustainability?
Server, webspace, Development. Will have a large upfront cost, with periodic maintenance costs to software and hardware over time.
Audience
audience?
Target Artists specifically
audience appeal?
How are you going to make this work for different mediums? Catagories? Create wanted lists and selling lists? Can you subscribe to a list to get alerts when something you are interested in is available?
Creativity
creator passion?
The creator does have concerns for art supply costs. Given that artists are generally a starving bunch, this makes sense, and could very well help.
originality?
This resembles a Buy/Sell/Trade type site. How can you make it original and easy for users to find what they need? I personally would recommend the list concept. Create a list of supplies that you are seeking, and you can get alerts when they become available within a certain range of miles? I think that would be a helpful feature that would also save me a significant amount of time.
