Approach 1—RyanL
- Approach 1-RyanL
- The music industry is unfair, and doesn’t give a chance to anyone who wants to make music from their own home.
- Background: My idea is that I create an app that allows ANY music-enthusiasts to release their music out to the public. This app would ban everyone with a contract to a record company, or anyone who has been at the top of the list for more than a month straight. This allows an out-with-the-old-in-with-the-new type of style. People would simply create their music, submit an audio file under their profile, and release it for the world to hear. This is extremely important because at one point this was what “soundcloud” was accomplishing. Unfortunately, when you look at the top lists on soundcloud (literally made for new and aspiring artists) you see “Migos”, “xxxtentacion”, “Lil Uzi Vert”, etc. What was once a fair and supportive platform, has turned into a dog-eat-dog world. People who already have contracts, and are big names in the music industry DOMINATE all platforms. Keeping these dominating-types of artists out of the mix allows for people looking for new music to see new artists that offer what they’re looking for in terms of style and feel.
- Explanation: The strategy is to provide a platform that keeps the big-dogs off the top charts, and the newer artists on the charts. The app/desktop site will let people of all ages and cultures submit their own music, even if it is very rough. My audience is kids, teens, young adults, and adults. I will reach them by making it an app and a website, where people can make comments and share music with each other. I am directly targeting the “sellout” artists who already are taking over the entire industry. There are many people out there who want to be heard, but unfortunately we live in a culture of “sex and violence sells”, hence why all of the larger artists only rap about money, sex, drugs, and gangs. This will help support an equal system for everyone, no matter what cause or belief that motivates them to make their music. It will be like a soundcloud 2.0. The way it will work is that let’s say you submit a song, and you see your music slowly creep up to the top 50, then to the top 25, and soon enough you’re in the top ten. Once you are in the top ten you will have two weeks for people looking at the “charts” to see and check out your music and donate to you. Then, your song will never be on the charts again. Using your donations, or motivation from being on the charts, you will drop more music that may or may not make it on to the charts in the future. It makes it a very competitive, but very fast-paced and fair way to play the system. To fix the problem of their being no way to go back and look at other’s music, there will be a hall of fame. You can sort this by day, month, and year to check the statistics. In the hall of fame, you can stay at the top for as long as you can without a time limit. This keeps the big dogs with record companies in THAT section, instead of constantly crowding the charts themselves.

- Rough budget for material
- Coding Software – Unity, XCode, HTML/CSS or atom.
- Knowledge of said code
- Laptop, phone, and internet.
- Time
- 2 Week to prep simple layout, web/design structure, and basic material gathering.
- 4 Weeks to code, refine, refine, and refine before final product is made.
- Space needed
- Can be done any time, anywhere. Just need internet, and patience.

Overview
*Interesting democratizing idea, and one that may be popular with new artists & fans. How would you ban musicians? How does your “top 50” subvert the soundcloud model? is the “top 10” mentality a cultural idea and if so, how does (or can) this app change that? While an interesting idea, this approach is not a significant improvement or development from Intent. Missing: lists of genres, alt approach , no questioning of whole “top 10” model which created the initial soundcloud problem… assumptions about “top 10” charts are similar, just less permanent; alternative ways to discover music not really explored… are user ratings & comments used similarly to soundcloud? as an example alternative, the app could be responsive to geolocation, and search for new music in the local area, esp live music venues, so you could listen to a song, like it, and then decide to go see the artists play locally, take video, interview artist, etc (You can use this idea if it appeals to you);
Concept
* many-many? yes
* NMD strategies? one/few coders, many contributors; DIY music; crowdsource for music & comments
* central issue/concept? democratize music, increase reach for new artists & fans
Design
* clear/apt?
* interactive/participatory? yes, artists can upload music, fan can listen & comment; but how do I find the kind of music I like? beside the popularity “top 50” model I don’t see how I will find specific music I like? you list “genre” but I don’t know which ones will be in the app. Are these user-generated? if so, how does the app reflect those categories/genres? can I search by other criteria like location, age, gender, topic, instruments, etc?
Technical
* tech? mobile app, code apt for concept
* sustainable? not explored
Audience
* audience? new/indy music lovers & artists
Creativity
* personal mark? some creativity in design; some imagination in considering a solution for new artists, missing any conceptual breakthrough or originality
