Approach 2 – Ethan C

Background

For my ‘Autobotography’ approach I chose to analyze media, discuss it and apply the lessons they teach to my own life. I decided on this for several reasons- firstly, I love stories, they’re an integral part of my life and I’ll take any chance I can to speak about them in-depth and analyze them. Secondly, I’m not very good at talking about myself, so this project is somewhat problematic for me. However, being able to speak about myself through the lens of other media makes it much more tenable.

This video isn’t entirely representative of what the final product would look like- it’s truncated in order to fit the format of the class (and time restraints) and more generalized to fit a more general audience. For the full-fledged project, I would like to take a deeper dive into both the media I’m speaking on, providing a more elaborate explanation of the media, and by establishing that additional insight, develop a more thorough theory on how I can apply the aspects of the story to my own life.

Explanation

Like a lot of people of the 21st century, I consume a lot of media. However, also like a lot of people, sometimes I don’t fully absorb what I’m consuming- I intake it kind of mindlessly.

This is a problem because these pieces of media aren’t mindlessly made- they’re the result of thousands of hours of work from hundreds to thousands of people, opening their hearts and telling their stories. Every story, whether it’s about people or aliens or dogs, is a human story, because it’s made by humans, for humans. Their stories mean something, and from their stories we can draw inspiration for ways we can change our own stories.

With the ‘medIa’ project, that’s exactly what I aim to do- create a series of videos analyzing the media I’ve experienced and to try to learn something from them that I can apply to my own life.
