The good news Economist:
A new edition of the popular news magazine The Economist, but with a twist: instead of reporting the actual news, this edition will cover hypothetical stories that could happen with some changes to government policy or societal norms.
Some possible headlines:
1. Mass Shootings decreased by 70% in 4 years
2. Bi-partisan gun control bill passes in Senate, House
3. According to new poll, 62% of high school teens feel safer in their schools since 2018
4. mothers of slain children in 2018 FL shooting start a charity that benefits those affected by gun violence
5. Survivors of U.S. mass shootings cause political activism and change
This is a two part project: the first is a physical copy of the fake magazine distributed on campus. The second part is a website, a clone of economist.com that has the same stories as the magazine; this will be distributed using stickers displaying the url posted around the Bangor area. Both platforms will have a portion that is dedicated to a statement about what the project is, as well as a collection of resources to help bring the stories about: Contact information for representatives, tips and tricks for organizing protests, etc. Because that is the goal of this project- to release a magazine full of stories of things that could be reality if there were some changes in our government and society.
The budget for this project is variable, depending on the scope.
Web domain: about $10/year for the domain ‘theeconomist.com’
Copy writing and design: roughly 25 hours spread over the team
Printing the magazine: ~ $.30/page so easily $50
Printing the stickers: ~$25 for a set of stickers.
Distribution: roughly 3 hours
Total estimate: Assuming $15/hour for labor, ~$460 for the entire project
(If this were a labor of love, it would be around $85. If we were to do this project in class, this is what the project would cost.)
