Autobotography Intent – DanielA
Project Mirror
Summary
An intimate, self-filmed documentary of daily that will reveal the identity that is hidden by social media.
Description
People use their phones and laptops to create an online persona that’s the most interesting and attractive version of themselves. People generally don’t express their ideas or feelings that might alienate people or make them vulnerable.
Video is the most important way to represent the self. It’s the most intimate way to see someone, and if someone is filming themselves– especially selfie videos– you get to see them as they are: no script, no filter. Thus, my intent is to create a sense of the self that’s represented by the way we see ourselves over time.
I’d represent myself in a one-to-many strategy by filming myself every hour, on the hour– no matter the setting– for a few seconds. Later, if I could make this a collaborative effort (a many-to-many approach) I’d ask others to do the same thing and edit them to play together at the same time. This would create an intimate, autobiographical documentary of my life that would exist in a series of ones and zeroes.
Budget
The budget that will exist for this is based on time. Filming will happen on a phone so as to capture life in the moment, wherever the subject may be. Although I say, “every hour, on the hour” there’s obviously going to be some downtime in the project while the subject is asleep.

This is an interesting idea. It would be fun to look back at little snippets of my own day and other peoples days when they didn’t know they were being filmed. I also think that making this a many to many approach is a good idea. I could see this being integrated into social media.
The one part about this that confuses me is how this is supposed to catch parts of peoples life every hour. While this isn’t true for everybody, most people tend to leave their phone in their pockets for a few hours straight, and that wouldn’t offer any interesting footage.
Concept
1.what media is the intent/project? 1-1, 1-many, many-many? explain
This project is 1-many. The creator of this project controls the documentary. The audience sees the same documentary.
2.does the idea enlist any of the New Media Strategies? If so which & how?
No, the idea does not enlist any of the New Media Strategies.
3.what major issue(s) does the project engage?
People use computer to create an online persona that’s the most attractive version of themselves. People don’t express ideas that might make people alienate them. Therefore, other people don’t know the hidden identity.
4.does the concept interest you?
I think the concept is interesting. I also think people hide parts of themselves. I want to know the hidden identity. The video will record what he does in a day. Everything he does will be captured. If he acts natural in front of the camera, the video will show the real him. I would watch a video that shows the real him because I want to know the real him. Also, it is fast and easy. I would want to know someone in a short amount of time, at the same time I don’t have to do a lot. I think he shouldn’t know he is being filmed. He will act more natural if he does not know he is being filmed. I think he should extend the length of the video.
Design
1.is the design clear and appropriate?
The design is clear. He will film himself every hour. The video will show the real him. After the people see the video, they will know the real him. I think it is appropriate as long as the video is healthy.
2.does the design invite attention and/or participation?
People will see the video. I think people watch a video that shows the real him because people are curious. He will invite some people to film themselves.
Technical
1.what tech is used? is it appropriate?
He uses a phone. Phone will satisfy his needs. He needs to have the camera with him every hour.
2.what is the cost? is it affordable for most people? the planet? is it sustainable?
The cost is dependent on time. It is affordable. People only need a camera.
Audience
1.who is the intended audience? I think he will post the video online. Then his friends will see the video, so the intended audience is his friends.
2.how is the project geared to the audience?
It will satisfy people’s curiosity.
3.would the project appeal to or challenge the audience? how/why?
I think people would watch the video because people want to know the hidden identity. I think people act differently when they are not around people. Therefore, I think he should film himself when he is not around people. In this way, the video will more likely to capture the hidden parts of him. People are curious.
Creativity
1.does the idea stem from some personal passion of the creator?
I think JenniCam inspired him. JenniCam also filmed herself.
2.can you detect the mark of a particular sensibility?
I want to film myself too. I think it will help me to know myself.
