I want to create a website and app that would allow artists to upload ideas to their own private page. Every day the user would get a notification of an archive of one of their own past ideas.

My inspiration for this idea came from a teacher I had last year. She is an author, and she told us that she kept a journal with her at all times and wrote down ideas for stories she had throughout the day. Later, when she was looking for a topic for a story, she would look through the journal to build on ideas she already had. She described this process and picking through a scrap pile.

I think this model is really helpful for any creative person. Most people who consider themselves artists are known for being disorganized and forgetful, including myself. Having a way to record your thoughts without the limitations of any real structure would be very helpful.

The app would allow you to upload pictures, videos, audio recordings, sketches, and text. You would have the ability to label them and put them in categories if you wish. Every day you would see one of your past posts to remind you of other ideas you have had. The site/app will organize all of your posts by key words, color scheme, speed/quality of sound, line weight/shape, and time spent on the post. This way you can see patterns in your own work that may extend across mediums, and realize any underlying themes in your thinking that can help direct your next project. I believe anyone could benefit from this, particularly artists, musicians, architects, photographers, writers, and anyone working in a creative process.

I see this as an autobotogrophy because it uses technology to explore the structure of your mind and thought patters, and all of the ideas and inspiration will come directly from you. I like apps like Pinterest because I like to look at other people’s work for inspiration, but I think the best ideas come from within yourself and I want this project to reflect that. This will prevent good ideas from being forgotten, and hopefully generate new inspiration for people as well as further develop their identity as an artist.

Timeline:

It would take at least a few weeks for me to learn how to code the organizational aspect. I also would want to create a sample account, so I would keep track of my own thoughts/ideas/artwork every day for a few weeks as well. That is how I will test the app to see if it works.

Budget:

If I were to make this, I would need help developing it. Building an app can get expensive, but through things like Google app builder, it could be as low as $300. One site allows you to pay by month; at $45/month. The price would depend on how long it would take to develop.

I would also need to maintain it, which could cost around $12/hour. I wouldn’t need to maintain it constantly since the app is pretty straightforward, but I would want to have it monitored and updated at least 4 hours a week.

  • I think there’s a lot of potential for this idea! I would really like a reminder to work on music for 30 minutes a day, and phone alarms are, I think, annoying / impersonal. Although hearing my old work might make me too sad or embarrassed to be productive.
