Eco Art Intent – EthanC

I would like to create a video game app for mobile devices that uses geo tagging to let players collect ‘creatures’ that coincide with whatever natural flora resides in that geographic location, while presenting the biological data of the creatures in a bestiary type fashion that tells a story on the dangers of a potential ‘brownfall’ (end-of-civilization scenario induced by brown technology).

Each creature would have its own bestiary page detailing the creature itself, the real-world plant it evolved from, and relevant tidbits about how the world got the way it is.

The application would allow players to collect virtual creatures that are based on real-world counterparts. For instance, if a hibiscus plant is native to their area, they might be able to discover the ‘Hibiscat’ creature. Discovering the creature would provide information on the creature’s background, including information on the hibiscus plant. This would both encourage players to explore the natural environments around them, but also provide some valuable information on their environment.

The wild and majestic ‘Hibiscat’ is just one of the amazing creatures you can discover. It can be milked for a regenerative tonic that makes you feel great!

The premise of the game is that the app is allowing you to connect to a version of the Earth 4000 years into the future, after a ‘brownfall’ scenario, in which much of the world’s natural life has had to evolve to adapt to changing environments. Each description of a creature and their lore would relate back to that scenario, providing glimpses into the world before and, hopefully, creating a compelling non-linear narrative that user’s experience by discovering all the different creatures, or sharing them with one another.

Budget: This would be a pretty huge undertaking and I’m not even sure how to budget it out. A similar project, Pokemon Go, had a team of people making it and millions of dollars to work with.

That being said, if I scaled the project down to the most manageable size and worked on it for a year, averaging 20 hours a week at $15/hour, the end result would be $14,400.

  • As I said in class – I would be super excited to see the kind of mutated creatures which came alive in this post-apocalyptic world, especially since these creatures are based on currently existing flora. I know you mentioned the idea of infighting between these creatures (like pokemon) is kind of contradictory, but the nature of these creatures seems to be quite aggressive… Perhaps a system where you weaken the creature in combat and then put it through a ‘restoration’ process to revert it to its original flora?
