Mall Tree Benches

These benches would be built with reclaimed/recycled wood, repurposed to serve your sitting needs. I have mocked up a few basic designs for folding benches that wrap around a tree at its trunk, or are fixed, and extend and elongate to provide more sitting/lounging surface area.  **media not uploading**

The benches are intended to take up a little amount of space, while still looking good, and functional and able to be attached to the tree. The benches fold out and in to allow space for grounds crew to mow the lawns and such.. A solar spot light with colored bulbs will provide light to the canopy of the tree as soon it is triggered by low light. (will a full summer leaf canopy shade the solar panel too much?) This light will provide beautification and and color, similar to the CCA when the colors transition on the glass. The light is part of the installation. People may recognize the new seats in the day time, but also will be pleasantly surprised that the canopy of the tree is lit up from underneath.

Lets provide more seating for students on campus, under their favorite trees. During the first days of spring when students come flooding out of the woodwork, and in the summer and fall, people are constantly outside on the mall sitting under trees. When the ground is soggy, it is more difficult to find a nice spot to sit. There is not enough seating outside, portable, or fixed.

The environmental issue and concern I have in mind is to focus on reusing old materials to create new functional products. Lumber companies in Maine sell reclaimed wood, focusing on conservation, premium quality, durability, antique value and aesthetic. Barn board flooring.. old dorm bed frames, dressers, etc.. that campus services are throwing out?

  • Concept:
I think that this is a really cool way for people to gain more appreciation for trees. I just recently was in that position of needing a place to sit out on the mall, but not having anywhere to stay dry. I think it’s a great idea to use reclaimed wood, allowing the project to reuse waste rather than create new.
    Design:
I think that you have done a good job of identifying your design, however visuals are needed for sure. The design definitely will engage people because people will want to sit on the benches and enjoy the trees.
    Technical:
The tech that you use would certainly be appropriate, using old wood would certainly follow the ideals of eco-art. I would like to see a more accurate price tag however.
    Audience:
I think it is easy to tell that your audience is for this specific installation would be the students and other visitors on campus.
    Creativity:
I think that this is a fairly creative project. It is unlike any of the other things we have really seen in this unit. I hope to see some drawings or renderings to really see what your creative decisions will be.
