EcoArt Intent – KeeganE

My intent is to create an interactive fiction which revolves around the environmental-issues of overpopulation and resource-depletion. ‘The Green Problem’ is a project which utilizes the environment, Inform 7, as its engine. The main character is played from the second-person perspective, putting the user in the place of the main character. This pits the user into a discordant dystopia established on the exploitation of the rising needs of a population growing far too quickly. It is the users goal to make decisions which effect the entire fiction; putting the user in the position to answer questions such as, “Would you cull off whole portions of the world to maintain sustainable-populations?”

Inspired from a childhood of playing Zork, my goal is to inspire the same feelings of adventure, excitement, and tension in an environmentally-themed story. The original Zork was a game which did its utmost to make me feel uncertain about every decision I made, and whether or not those decisions would cost my character’s life… In this game, your character’s choices effect the entire population of my fictional world – and the only way to make that feel meaningful is to have properly crafted a world worth fighting for.

The cost of this project would be around $10.00 an hour for time committed, for a project which would take roughly 20-30 hours to complete (estimate). This puts my budget at around $200-$300.

  • Hey, just wanted to let you know I think this is a super cool idea. I actually have a breadth of experience with Inform 7, as I’ve used it for random projects since I was in about 10th grade. My most recent project is a Les Miserables text adventure, where you play as Jean Valjean and make decisions that affect the direction of the story. If you ever have any issues, or are wondering how you’re going to do something, don’t hesitate to ask and I can probably help you figure it out.

Oh, and here’s the finished project: http://jamesaustin.nmdprojects.net/game.html

  • Concept

The media being use for this project is int he form of software called Inform 7 for creating the story and other features.
The new media strategy being used for this project is the many to many strategy by getting multiple people to interact in the narrative.
The issues that could be faced for this assignment could be a lack of understanding of how the narrative functions and how to control the story.
What is interesting about this project is that it presents a new way to tell a story using the environment centerpiece of the story and allowing people to control how the story goes.
    Design

The design of the project seems to give a clear view of what it will like and how the story could function when created.
It engages people by giving images of the actual narrative and what it will be when the project is created.
    Technical

From what was seen in the example images the program has been used before and seems to be the ideal tool for this project.
The cost of this project seems to be reasonable and you have all the tools have at your deposal for use and are able to afford it.
    Audience

The audience for this project appears to be for people who like the chance to control a story in the direction they want to.
The appeal would be for people who enjoy writing stories or the ability to make their own decisions that effect the outcome of it.
    Creativity

The creators passion appears to come from storytelling and the ability to use software to create a narrative that people can control.
The idea is something completely new and give people a way to decide how the narrative should go.
