EcoArt Intent – SamW
For my Ecoart intent I will be creating a photography installation to highlight litter and destruction of our natural resources.
Our environment is all that we have, and the fact that we are destroying it at such an alarming rate is quite disheartening to those who pay attention. The goal of this project and photo installation is to contrast the beauty of nature and how humans have changed this in many locations, hopefully raising awareness to this.
The installation will include photos of beautiful untouched nature scenes placed next to photos highlighting litter or other unpleasant human caused damage to nature. My hope is that having these contrasting images near each other will evoke sadness and awareness in people, and eventually cause them to help out in the global effort to save the environment.
Budget:
Camera plus lens: 1500$
Printing costs: 200$
Framing costs: 300$
Time: 300$

I think this is a very simple yet potentially powerful way to make people aware of litter. I know in NMD 341 I always found myself taking photos of litter, and soon realized its not very hard to find around campus (sadly). From experience I think theres both disappointment in taking these images, but at the same time I want to rub them in peoples faces to show them whats all around them. It’s a highly doable project, and taking a stroll around campus you can find trash literally everywhere.
I like this contrast a lot. I like it because I think people are responsive to photos that upset them, or challenge them. I also feel that in order to expect a participatory change from someone, the photos must really stand out and tell a story of their own. Perhaps you could do a couple series that focus on one particular item or trend. For example focusing individually on how plastic, glass, or metal end up where they do, and how they impact the environment in which they are in. Although this could be hard because usually when you find a heap of trash somewhere, there are all sorts of items in it… Also, maybe show images of how to help the cause. Peer inside an incinerator for burning waste. Get the lowdown on landfills. Touch base on recycling. Dig into the world of composting..
