Aquacrop

My project idea is a set of connected crops that float on a lake surface. There is no soil involved.

In the past 40 years the world has lost a third of its arable land due to erosion or pollution. Using lakes as a surface to produce crops, aquatic plants, we won’t waste water. about 70 percent of all the world’s freshwater withdrawals go towards irrigation uses. This project combats two main ecological issues: pollution and water waste.

Planting these plants on the surface of lakes and ponds (freshwater) allows us to use water already in place, or water that would otherwise evaporate, and use it to produce food. I would plan to grow tomatoes, bell peppers, lettuce, corn, rice and beans.

Upon researching plants that can grow in cold water type areas I’ve decided on watercress, although cranberries, reeds, and types of sedges were also choices. I know now that you can’t grow Mediterranean plants in water, especially colder water.
