Hacktivism Intent-ColeT

Cyberbullying Awareness

My intent is a website dedicated to making people aware of cyberbullying and ways you can avoid it so a person doesn’t experience it or to prevent more exposure to it.

This project will be a website that will include ways on how to avoid cyberbullying by using videos showing signs of what could be cyberbullying and how to be careful with what you do on the internet. Also on the website there will be stories of those who have experienced cyberbullying and have been interviewed about their experience. There will also be video interviews as well detailing what each person experienced during cyberbullying and how it affected their lives.

It would benefit those who haven’t been exposed to cyberbullying and they will know what to avoid after seeing the website. People don’t realize how the internet can be used to hurt you and the people you are in contact with. The best way to avoid that is to know if what you’re doing on the internet is safe and hearing what happened to someone is better because it get more of a real world view by seeing a person’s life experience. I want the internet to be a place where people don’t have to worry about being bullied if they are in real life and increase the connections they have to people. It’s also to give them a better sense of awareness of what’s on the internet and not just jump into it with no care in the world.

Cyberbullying is still a big issue today and it hasn’t really decreased as much as it should and I want this website to improve that situation. People would know how cyberbullying can occur and what you can do to stop it. If I were to consider a budget for this project I would take into account the amount it would be to use a website builder like Dreamweaver if I want an advance site that has all the material I want on it which would be $30.00 for each month I need to use it. There is also film equipment which I could use from the IMRC on campus and would have to know how much it cost for a long term rental. The last would be how much it would cost to put the website on the internet and what to pay for the amount of time that it’s kept there.

  • Concept:
I think this is an important issue and I like the idea. I think you could do a lot with this–I know there are apps that include a wide range of issue-based support groups that are heavily monitored to prevent any form of harassment. I think adding something similar as part of the site that allows people to share their stories with each other in a safe environment could be huge.
I think it would be considered many to many because it creates an online community.
    Design:
The website mockup you designed looked very professional. I think if you were to actually create it you could potentially make a very high functioning site.
    Technical:
I think building the site would be free, but you would need to pay someone to maintain it. I think it is important that the site is heavily monitored to prevent people from posting spam/hurtful comments.
    Audience:
The audience could be anyone who has been affected by cyberbullying as a resource for help/support, but I also think you could use it as an educational tool. You could give it to elementary/middle school teachers to show kids the real life effects of cyberbullying. Many schools give their kids laptops and then try to teach them how not to harass people online, which doesn’t seem to work. Having personal stories and videos could really have a powerful affect on them.
    Creativity:
I think it is a good idea and you can find ways to be very creative in your web design. It has a lot of potential to help people.
