Problem:  Plastic is killing our oceans

My idea for a project is to make an interactive VR exhibit to inform and show people how our oceans are being affected by pollution. The scenarios would range from drone videos of the “plastic bag islands” forming in the middle of the ocean to what the sea is going to look like in 25 – 100 years. These videos compiled with tips of how to cut down on our usage of plastic and non recyclable goods could help slow down the damage being done to the ocean.

This method could be used to bring light to the current state of our oceans. People know the ocean is polluted but don’t quite understand how polluted. An interactive Virtual reality scenarios could be a good way to to help educate and shock people into changing their lifestyles.

Ideally there would be a control system that went along with the goggles. These controls would enable the user to adjust settings and see the outcome.

ex. change the future view if everyone stopped using plastic bags or if we ignore the problem for 25 more years. The user would interact and set there own future.

  • Concept
I think the concept is sound and has the ability to get people on board for stopping this issue and making them more aware of it. It also brings back the issue of pollution which should be brought up more than it usually is in the world.

    Design
The design incorporates the use of VR which is on the rise in the last couple of years and is good way to view an exhibit of this caliber. It also give more than one person the chance top view the exhibit individually instead of all in one group.

    Technical
VR is the tech I being used and is good way to attract people because of the multiple uses it has. The cost of the exhibit is unknown at the moment and I would like to know what the estimated price could be for a museum exhibit like this.

    Audience
The audience I believe is for people who attend the museum everyday and people who are involved in environmental science and what to know how far the issue goes. I think that this project will appeal to people because it uses technology that many of us are using ourselves today and also we want to know how the pollution could effect us in the future.
    Creativity
This person who created the intent does have the passion for this project because he want’s to see a new and better way to deal with this issue and has come up with a unique way to do so.

  • I think that using VR in this way is a good idea. Using a popular emerging technology is a great way to catch the attention of people who normally just wouldn’t care. I think that this could be brought one step further and be made into a many to many experience. A website where people are encouraged to post pictures of the ocean (both clean and dirty) that they have taken themselves. This would make the experience more real and bring more people in on the experience.

  • I think this project would fall under the category of “one to many”. I think using VR, something the world is currently interested in would be an effective, and interesting, mean to get the message across. The project engages environmental issues, specifically the ocean.

I think the design is pretty clear. Obviously some of the graphics would need to be explained a little more, but overall, it’s clear. I think giving users an option to choose which outcome they want to see would be pretty effective, and more likely to draw them in.

The technology used seems to be just VR, but also maybe some drone footage. The costs of VR sets are currently going down, but I think this would be a really interesting exhibit at aquariums or museums.

I think the intended audience would be the uninformed members of society, who need to decrease their plastic consumption to stop it from entering the oceans in large quantities. Getting people involved through virtual reality seems to be what’s going to gear people towards this project. I think this project would both appeal and challenge the audience. By showing them all of the possible outcomes, I think it would make them realize how important it is.

I think the passion is there. As far as originality goes, I can’t say, because I haven’t really looked into if exhibits exactly like this one already exist.

  • Concept:
I really like this idea. I think rather than talking about the issue it is often more effective to show people. When you involve people, they start to understand.
    Design:
This will combine technical and artistic elements with virtual reality. I know a senior who created something to teach people about fish farms using virtual reality, and he had fish that would swim around you that could sense where you were. Underwater is a great setting for VR because it gives you a totally new perspective that you couldn’t easily get otherwise.
    Technical:
I have no idea how much this would cost to make, but once you finish it you won’t need to keep putting money into it which is good.
    Audience:
The audience could be people of any age who want to learn more about the ocean. If you end up actually creating this, let me know. One of my best friends is a director at the Seacoast Science Center in Rye, NH, which is a nonprofit that rehabilitates sea creatures and educates the community. They have a museum and aquarium and I’m sure they would be interested in displaying something like this. I think it would be a great way to show people their impact on the environment.
    Creativity:
I think this is extremely creative in that it combines graphic art with an important issue. I think many people would find this project fascinating.

  • Design-
I really like how interactive the idea is. To be able to look around and see an ocean full of trash may really raise the awareness in some people.
    Audience-
Where will you display this piece? Where will it be so that people look at it.
    Technical-
How do you plan on demonstrating what the ocean could look like 25-100 years from now? How do you turn a prediction into a visual graphic for the audience?
