Hacktivism Intent-JackL

Internet Social Compass (ISC)

Abstract: ISC is the all-in-one web browser application that allows you to manage all your social media without ever having to switch tabs.

The idea is to create a simple and easy way to keep track of all the social media a user might be involved in. To create a customizable browser overlay that will keep things unified, and yet unique. Users will be able to access any and all social media they wish to, including picking and pulling different aspects that they like about each platform of social media, and congregate it together into a personalized experience that will make life much more simple.

So who is ISC important for, and why? ISC is for anybody with multiple platforms of social media. Which is most people. Previously, in order to use any one platform of social media, it must be the only platform of social media you are currently using on that same device. This is to say, currently, one cannot chat on Facebook while they are also actively looking through their Twitter feed. If one was playing Spotify while they were looking through Instagram, they’d have to go back to their Spotify tab or web player in order to interact with it. With ISC, a user can access any and all social media that they want to, all while remaining on the same page they are currently browsing.

As for strategies to be used, once an understanding of what ISC does and the potential it has is created by just some, it will not take long to spread to many. Doing anything necessary to let people know of it’s existence should be all it takes to help it find success.

The target audience is the people ISC is important for as mentioned above.

Budget and Timeline

This project is entirely based in code. Because of this, there is nothing required in materials except for any potential licensing of logos or such. Theoretically, the only cost should be work compensation. As for software and tools, all that is really required is a text editor, server host, and an FTC. All three of those things are already in possession and can be free, which eliminates cost there. The timeline depends on how many people are working on the project. Just one person would probably take months to bring this project to fruition.

  • PROJECT FEEDBACK FORM
    Concept
    what media is the intent/project? 1-1, 1-many, many-many? Explain
This project is one to many because it’s one person creating it and then sending it out to many other people.
does the idea enlist any of the New Media Strategies? If so which & how?
It’s Sharing what was Inaccessible because before this, nothing like this intent was possible but now it will be through use of code.
what major issue(s) does the project engage?
The issue of having to take extra time to switch browsers or pick up your phone to check on something. It engages an increase in work efficiency.
    does the concept interest you?
Not really, but that’s because I’m older, don’t have a ton of friends online, and I’m out of touch with technology (and I’m a New Media major? Crazy, right?).
    Design
is the design clear and appropriate?
Yes, it was simple and concise.
does the design invite attention and/or participation?
Of course, anyone who loves code and wants a more collaborative web interface would see the appeal of this product.
    Technical
what tech is used? is it appropriate?
Coding, the internet and all the social media sites. It’s appropriate because that’s what the whole thing is about.
what is the cost? is it affordable for most people? the planet? is it sustainable?
It basically costs nothing but time, which is cheap.
    Audience
    who is the intended audience?
Coders and young people. And old people who are trying to be young, or who are super smart and tech-y like Elon Musk or Bill Gates or Steve Jobs (R.I.P.)
how is the project geared to the audience?
Through the internet and word of mouth. Code is always intriguing to other coders.
would the project appeal to or challenge the audience? how/why?
It would appeal for the many reason listed above. It would be a challenge because in conceptualizing something like this there are always unforeseen obstacles.
    Creativity
does the idea stem from some personal passion of the creator?
Yes, Jack likes code. I know this because he asks a lot of questions about it in our class that is all about coding.
can you detect the mark of a particular sensibility?
He seems to have it well thought out, and is excited by it.

  • Concept

what media is the intent/project? 1-1, 1-many, many-many? explain – It seems 1 to many as a team of developers will let this loose on the world, but it is also many-to-many as the app is based on social media.

does the idea enlist any of the New Media Strategies? If so which & how? – I think this aggregates and automates data as well as upstaging the man because it is taking what you enjoy most from each social media platform and turning them into a one-stop shop for your enjoyment.

what major issue(s) does the project engage? – It provides a solution for all of the poorly designed aspect of various social media platforms.

does the concept interest you? – It does, but I have doubts about how it would actually work. Would it be one page with a Spotify track running on the bottom while you scroll through twitter? How do you plan to combine all of the major platforms into one?

    Design

is the design clear and appropriate? – Yes, it states how it could be done, with the appropriate recourses.

does the design invite attention and/or participation? – Yes, because almost everybody uses some form of social media.

    Technical

what tech is used? is it appropriate? – code and social media. Yes

what is the cost? is it affordable for most people? the planet? is it sustainable? – Im not sure what the cost would be to create this but it would be sustainable.

    Audience

who is the intended audience? – Everyone who uses social media.

how is the project geared to the audience? – To make social media a cleaner and easier experience.

would the project appeal to or challenge the audience? how/why? – I believe it would appeal to most people but would first challenge them because all new technology is pushed away at first, the next step would be to make it good enough to keep people coming back.

    Creativity

does the idea stem from some personal passion of the creator? – As all users of social media we understand that some aspects of it are less intuitive than others. Creating this product would help get around those areas.

can you detect the mark of a particular sensibility?

  • This is a cool idea, and with social media proliferation I can see the appeal of simplifying to a single platform. But I’m still at a loss for how I would use it. Would I pick a spotify song, post a tweet, upload a Facebook photo, and view a snapchat all from one window? Would this window be complex?
It’s not the code that worries me but the interface–it sounds pretty complex..unless you are thinking of somehow simplifying all these tasks…

And then while it’s efficient to have one platform, doesn’t that create a single monopoly, like Google, and doesn’t that consolidate power? Is this a good thing just for efficiency? Or could this be dorm in a more distributed way?

What are the implication of this ind of interface?

And BTW coding and servers can get very expensive. And are never really free (unless you are a slave to coding, and code for no pay…)

So while I think the idea is clever, it also spooks me–I kinda like my media diversity rather than a single monoculture…and I wonder if all these companies would want to be assimilated? But maybe I’m misunderstanding…maybe the companies remain intact, and all just use some simplifying interface to access all? I guess I need a bit of clarification.
