Hacktivism Intent – LigonS

My intent is to promote reproductive health. My focus is mainly on women’s reproductive health because that seems to be the most trivial today with attempts, generally from conservatives, to cut off services and things that promote reproductive health such as quality sex ed, birth control, and access to abortions. This is especially prevalent for lower income families and women. This would benefit the government as a whole and its individual citizens. This is so because with access to contraception means such as birth control helps women and men avoid unintended pregnancies and so would save the government billions of dollars regarding health care.

With that I think it would be most effective to post large photos of what would happen to women and possibly men if we got rid of means of allowing citizens reproductive health. An example of this would be imagery of women having coat hanger abortions. I think that this image would be most profound because it’s gruesome, shocking, and something people would not want to see as reality, but without access to safe abortions and birth control it’s all too much of a reality. Along with these posters it would be important to post statistics and facts supporting rights to reproductive health and annunciating life without access to birth control and safe abortions.

This approach would take a fair amount of time and effort from people around the country and would be costing people/organizations from each state hundreds of dollars for prints, however, I think this would be most effective as it causes the most shock in showing realities of life without things like birth control and access to abortions possibly urging those who have the power to allow women to receive such services to do so.

  • Your topic is important and timely. However the images are really dated–as they have been part of reproductive rights campaigns for decades. Can you think of a specifically New Media way to address these issues? And it may help to be specific: do you mean access to safe abortion? Birth control? etc.
I’m also wondering if a different angle might help? For example stories are often really compelling if they help viewers to sympathize. But do we want good reproductive health just because we have a horror image of a hangar abortion? Or do we want to focus on the real issues behind unwanted pregnancies–and try to solve those? We give soldiers life/death jurisdiction, perhaps there is a parallel with women also having this life/death jurisdiction?
Could there be a pro-life campaign that honors all life (mother, fetus, potential child) enough to say no when the conditions are not supportive of life?
I guess I’d just like to see some new and original thinking on this issue of how to given women access to the health care they need to make proper life/death decisions. And I’d like to see our culture give them that responsibility.

Can you find a more original angle, as well as New Media strategies for addressing this issue?

  • Concept

    what media is the intent/project? 1-1, 1-many, many-many? explain
This intent seems like it is a one-to-many because it is a campaign trying to influence the general population.

does the idea enlist any of the New Media Strategies? If so which & how?
I mean it would require poster and image creation. There is not much of another angle here.

what major issue(s) does the project engage?
This project is attempting to engage the problem of access to birth control and legal abortions (I think).

    does the concept interest you?
The movement interests me, but not this particular concept. It seems a bit dated and done already. It is not particularly new or invigorating.

    Design

is the design clear and appropriate?
The design is clear, but I really do not think that posters are the way to go about it. I feel like we plenty of that ever day of our lives.

does the design invite attention and/or participation?
Not really. It is just something for the people to view.

    Technical

what tech is used? is it appropriate?
Images are used, but I do not necessarily think they are the best way to tackle this issue.

what is the cost? is it affordable for most people? the planet? is it sustainable?
It would cost nothing to the people, but it would cost different associations hundreds of dollars, when they are usually run on donations anyway.

    Audience

    who is the intended audience?
The intended audience is anyone that sees these images.

how is the project geared to the audience?
It isn’t really geared towards the audience. It is more trying to challenge the audience.

would the project appeal to or challenge the audience? how/why?
It would challenge the audience because they are being shown something that they do not want to see.

    Creativity

does the idea stem from some personal passion of the creator?
I am not sure. It seems like they care about the movement, but I do not know this person.

can you detect the mark of a particular sensibility?
    Not really, no.
