Response 1- AnnieH
So far this class has already exposed me to work that I find interesting. My favorite documentary so far has been the “Yes Men” trailer. There is something about social justice that has always inspired me. I think New Media is about taking whatever skills and talents you have and creating something, and the Yes Men chose to create a movement. They used their hacking, networking, and acting abilities to hold a fake press conference on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce, announcing that they were now in favor of environmental protection and climate change prevention. They held this conference to draw attention to the fact that the Chamber of Commerce was against passing laws that would benefit the environment, which put pressure on the Chamber to change their stance (and they eventually did).
I have always loved this idea of civil disobedience, where people can rebel against an unjust system in a peaceful way. I am a sophomore with a double major in New Media and Social Work, and I hope to combine the two possible carriers into one. I am interested in non-profit work, community outreach, and social justice. I think New Media is a great way to expose injustice, and social work is the best way to witness injustice.
One thing I hope to eventually do is film a documentary. There are so many issues in this country alone involving poverty, discrimination, and abuse that need to be seen.
In the future I want to either work for or own a non-profit. My focus in New Media is film and graphic design, so I could be in charge of networking as well.

That’s a robust definition of New Media–and it aligns with your passions.
If you’re into social justice & documentary, you might enjoy some documentaries we’re looking at in my Advanced Digital Narrative class. We’re looking at changing the world via stories, beginning with the broken cultural story we’re currently in:
