Response 1—FrankO

To me the term new media is technology that is capable of completing many different tasks, through different people. The definition changes a lot due to the technology around us rapidly evolving. Examples of new media are Blogs, Social Media, and video games. These examples enable many people on opposite sides of the world to interact with each other.

An article that caught my interest last week was “Many-to-many as a new media strategy”. I enjoyed this article because it brought up reasons why new media is considered to be many to many, meaning that information can be shared and other people can share it. And the exercises that were in the article also made it easier to understand the many to many strategy more.

The potential of new media is great, the possibilities are endless. I can see more information being shared, more quickly. With this happening, new media could change the way people across the world are entertained and consume information.

I have a great interest in cars, so if I was to use the powers of new media, I would have to apply its powers to build a functional vehicle. I would not build a smart car but I would find a way to make a vehicle more efficient in every way possible while making it powerful and safe.

If I would build something with new technology it would have to be a fast vehicle. I say this because we are slowly beginning to see vehicles like Teslas, which have a lot of new technology that one would not think would be included in a vehicle.

  • I’m interested in the intersection of New Media & cars.
I think of cars as one-to-one vehicles. But because the cost–energetically of giving each human their own car is too high for it to work for everyone, it has its limits. A solar power car could be an exception, though is everyone wealthy enough (and does the earth have enough raw materials without damaging critical ecosystems and other life to produce this many cars?) Or would we want to? Cars are destroying our National Parks.

Also sitting for extended periods of time is not good for humans.

However biking is very good for human health, cheap, and can be augmented with solar power.

Is there a kind of “personal transportation vehicle” like a car, but good for humans AND the environment that you can imagine building with New Media tools?

How does the Open Source Ecology set view cars, for example:

    Cool!
