WHAT IS NEW MEDIA?

New media according to the article is the use of technology to bridge the incompatible characteristics of prior communication media. It’s hallmarks include personalized information that can be shared with anyone or everyone in the world, and whoever is involved has equal control over the content. These two hallmarks counteract the disadvantages of the other two forms of media, making New media the most influential and important form of media in today’s society. The Interpersonal medium is still relevant for development, social, and many other reasons, but even though the New medium has been in use for less than 100 years it’s content is still viewed just as much if not more. Today a person can go several hours or more without have any interaction with the Interpersonal or Mass medium but it is very rare that someone will go 10 minutes without viewing any content from the New medium.

To “define reality” through the media content must be able to be viewed quickly and by as many people as possible. With New media that is this is easy for anyone in the world to do. Whoever “defines reality” with this media must have the most people using or viewing content through them. With so many different ways to interact with the New medium it must always be updated and advanced to keep the viewers attention, and the people who are able to create these improvements to the medium are the ones who will be able to “define reality.”

PROBLEM: A DISAPPEARING LANGUAGE

Solution A  Create a taskforce from a select group of Native American language experts, and ask them to write down a dictionary of words and their definitions. Enter these definitions into a database and build a Web site that allows anyone to search for terms and hear their pronunciation. Hire a high-profile Web designer and marketing firm to ensure that as many people as possible learn about this resource.

Solution A in this scenario would allow the content to be worked on and viewed by many more people

solution B. While the content in solution B might be more entertaining to the masses it does not meet the

goal of preserving the language as well as solution A does.

PROBLEM: NEGLECTED RUINS

Solution B  Build a Web site that allows adventurers to print stickers they can leave behind in abandoned buildings they explore. Create the stickers so they can be scanned by a mobile phone to reveal a Web site built to feature photographs taken by those explorers.

Solution B is a great example of the “many-to-many” principle. This solution allows anyone in the world to

continuously update and add more content to the project making sure that it will stay relevant for a longer

amount of time. With solution A I’m sure the release of the DVD would have a good outcome but it would

Be forgotten about and outdated.

PROBLEM: MISUNDERSTANDING COMPUTER ANIMATION

Solution B  Create an iPad application that documents each stage of the animation process, using stills from the archeologist film as illustrations. Explain techniques such as ray tracing, motion capture, and morphing. Include links to companies that create animation software such as Autodesk.

Solution B would allow anyone with a tablet or smartphone to have access to this information. I’m not

sure how solution A would be implemented but it does not seem like something that could be done easily

or personally accessed by many people.

PROBLEM: A BROKEN FOUNTAIN

Solution A  Repurpose the existing plumbing to irrigate a garden planted in the former fountain. Research the types of plants that would grow well together at different levels of the fountain, and meet with dining hall staff to find out what herbs or vegetables they might add to salads and other offerings. Then plant these in collaboration with the sustainable agriculture club on campus, and invite students to pick the resulting parsley, strawberries, and other fare from the garden for their lunch.

While solution B might be a little bit more involved with new media, it is much less practical which is more

Important for this project. Involving an on campus club and allowing students to interact with the project

would have a much better influence on campus life and allow more people to be involved with the project.

EXERCISE 2: INVENT YOUR OWN MANY-TO-MANY SOLUTIONS

STUDENT FILMS ARE ALWAYS SET IN DORMS

A solution to this problem would be to create an app or website similar to Airbnb that allows people with property to post their buildings or land and offer to people who are looking for a place to film or take photographs. This idea could also be expanded to allow property rentals for more than film, it could be expanded to allow people to share other things that they own with people for either profit or recreation. Users would also be able to leave feedback about others to verify the legitimacy of other users which is important when dealing with others that you do not know from the internet.
