Response 1 – RyanL

RESPONSE 1b (EDITED VERSION):

  1. The topic we are going to be speaking on is hacking hacktivism, where in “hacktivism” we have to find an organization or system and go against it. This is a hostile way of trying to make change.
  2. The proposal would be to make a website that allows you to put a system down that you dislike or disagree with, and instead of trying to hack it.
  3. This website will be open to anyone to speak their mind about better ways to have systems. You could send a series of emails to public figures with your recommendations and changes.

RESPONSE 1b:

The article “This Changes Everything” about the 1% was very interesting. I remember back when I first heard of the one percent, and how confusing to me it was to comprehend 99% of the population being below a certain threshold. The article explains how unfair it is that the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer. I agree with 90% of what the article was saying, and I agree that we live in a corrupt system with very little benefits going to the 99%. However, I think that instead of starting protests (which can be effective) we should be starting to find loopholes. If we can’t make enough money from a 9-5 job due to the government and our economy, I think there are loopholes we can find in this system to get ourselves to the 1%. If enough people did this (multiple sources of income, entrepreneurship, etc), we would be FORCING those statistics to go down. I really think that this is necessary if we are going to be pro-people and against the government. Instead of sitting there with signs and protesting, I think we should actively be trying to “hack” the system, and get ourselves to the top our own way instead of the conventional way. By protesting, you’re giving more reason for the government to be angry and put MORE restrictions on us. Maybe if we found those loopholes and took advantage of them, we would be showing the 1% that they aren’t so special after all.

  1. My topic is going to be on Hollywood. All of the money is in Hollywood, meaning if your proposed ideas for a film goes to the rich-Hollywood investors and your beliefs don’t line up with theirs… They will cut you down and keep you at the bottom. I want this to change.

2. My proposal and strategy would be to somehow get Hollywood to be more equal. Every movie that comes out is from a super rich, super biased director that wants to spread a certain perspective or belief around. This gives an unfair advantage to people who want to be directors, but have their own beliefs instead of the falsely portrayed Hollywood beliefs in movies. The strategy would probably involve enforcing a new legal system for Hollywood, that prevents sexual assault, and corrupt systems within the entertainment industry. Of course, this is going to be very hard to achieve, but with heavy monitoring from legal authority, you can take out the system from the inside out.

3. I would probably reach my target audience by spreading the word to teenagers, young adults, and adults alike. People who are sick of the corruption that happens in Hollywood will definitely be on the boat. Especially victims of pedophilia, sexual assault, and violence will be looking to get back at Hollywood and how corrupt the system is. Directors force actors and actresses against their own will to get leading roles that they want. So the advertising for this would have to be done online.

RESPONSE 1a :

  1. What is New Media? I thought this was a very interesting article. I must admit though, at first I had a really hard time keeping up with the technical terms. When I finally was able to push through the article, it gave me a much better idea of what New Media actually was. I used to think newspapers, magazines, and even the internet was a “medium”, but that changed after reading this. It was interesting to see the difference between a vehicle and a medium, and how they compared land to cars, and water to boats. Back in the day, mass media wasn’t specific to people. You heard what you heard whether it resonated with you or not. Today, the media has allowed us to search through internet articles, podcasts, videos, and blogs that fit our exact passions and interests. I can relate to this, as I spend a lot of time doing research and learning more about what I love to do. Back in the day, people didn’t have this option unless they spoke one-on-one to someone.
  2. New Media Strategies.

A Disappearing Language – Having the dictionary of the Native American language would be many-to-many because it would allow anyone anywhere to find words in that language with their definition. The only drawback would be not knowing their grammar. That would be the only positive about having the grandparents stories.

Abandoned Buildings – The many-to-many solution would be the maps with abandoned buildings adventurers stickers. I say this because people could find local abandoned buildings and it would relate to them more. Watching a single documentary/cinematography video on abandoned buildings would be tough because unless that’s what people are looking for, it’s going to be a one-to-many due to the format.

Animation – Solution B seems like a more informational solution that teaches people how complex it is, but it isn’t many-to-many platform. Solution A would allow anyone, whether they like animation or not, to be able to interact with an ipad game that let’s you do it yourself. That would be much more effective with a mass amount of people.

Fountain – Solution A is definitely many-to-many. Not only would this solution allow the cafeteria to get involved,  but also students who eat healthy, students who don’t have much for food, and even the students in the agriculture group.

3. I thought it was very interesting that Augusto was starting a movement in Brazil, and the government took it so badly that they killed his friends and coworkers. Even that didn’t stop him, because after travelling to different countries to flee, he eventually got elected back into Brazil. The interesting part was his theater. I thought it was very cool how the audience could make decisions and even participate in the act. It reminded me of “choose your own adventures”. The amount of improv involved was very complex and made me wonder how they prepared for such crazy storylines. This sounds like a very many-to-many way to reach people. Whether you like spectating, changing the story, or acting/participating, there seems to be something for everyone there.

  • “Maybe if we found those loopholes and took advantage of them,” Hmm…do you think this might be a “new media” reply? and would there be a “top” if 50% of people made it there? And is there enough wealth Or natural resources) for 50% of the people to be wealthy? Is there something else wrong with this system?
Could Netflix/Indie Media be an alt to Hollywood? Is it more “new media”?
