Sam W- approach 2
In the world we live in today, people do their best to show a certain side of themselves online, one that is as groomed and as flattering as possible. This gives a false view into a persons life. This project aims to change that.
UnLocked is an autobiography project that continuously captures photos of the user when they are not prepared, giving a more intimate, ungroomed look into that persons life. These photos are collected when the iPhone or computer is woken from sleep, automatically snapping a picture. These photos are then compiled into a video that shows the persons organic portraits as time goes by.
My initial ideas for this project were someone inspired by the youtube who took a photo of himself everyday for years. I wanted to use this concept in a way that would cover a shorter period of time and photos that were not posed for. After coming up with an initial idea to have an app only for the iPhone that would take a photo 1 out of 5 times the iPhone was unlocked, I wanted to change my idea so that it was compatible for computers too and also so that it took an image more often. I was inspired to bring it to computers too after seeing Eric’s idea.
Budget:
500$ – programming labor
20$ – Adobe premiere
1000$ for laptop (500$ if iPhone is used)

Simple, yet effective in bringing to light the side of people that is raw, unfiltered, organic.. With social media platforms driving the cultural shift that influences peoples sexual desires, friendly encounters, business ventures, etc.. we need something like this that shows a side of us that most people today don’t like. Pretty much everyone wants to post pictures, and be tagged in ones that they look good in. It’s more fun to get to know someone when you’re not exposed to the potential for fallacy which lies behind the notion of self-esteem- editing pictures to make you look hotter.
This would be an interesting case study over time to see how people change or react to the new content, and how relationships form or get destroyed.
